Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala 1915-1985

Tapio Wirkkala is considered by many to be the grand master of Finnish mid-century design. He’s prolific career includes not only glass products but anything from banknotes to jewelry to lamps to flatware to graphic art. He was born in Hanko, Finland in 1915 and passed away at 70 in 1985.

He was the most awarded designer in Finland, winning three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, and another three in 1954.
